ABC, or Aggregate Base Course, has a number of attractive characteristics. The sub-layer material of an asphalt roadway, known as the Base Course, is laid directly on top of undisturbed soil (Sub-Grade) to create a foundation for the top layers of the pavement. It's commonly formed from a mixture of aggregate rock sizes ranging from 1′′ to fine dust. Quarried rock, reclaimed asphalt, and concrete are all used to make aggregate.

Aggregate Base is used as a base course for asphalt surface roadways, concrete slabs, and structural foundations, as well as backfill for underground pipelines and other underground utilities within a roadway. It is spread out carefully and compacted to a minimum thickness.
